A Safe Space for Curiosity

Welcome to Jonathan Oppong-Wiafe Counselling.

"If you are wholly perplexed and in straits, have patience, for patience is the key to joy.” Rumi

I believe that at some stage in our lives, we will all search for something: a reason, an answer, a partner, understanding, peace, an escape, another option or direction. That inquiry can be exciting, frightening, uncertain or seemingly hopeless.

We understand ourselves in relation to the people we encounter in our lives. Therefore, our relationship, how it’s held, and how we develop it are essential aspects of the time we spend together. I aim to help us build a warm, safe space where you can explore whatever it is that may be challenging. A space for us to hold the questions and, or answers delicately with patience and integrity so you can compassionately engage with the uncertainty of change.

I will bring the full breadth of my nuanced identity into our sessions, allowing me to sensitively engage with your experiences. Additionally, I am neurodivergent.

I have worked with individuals from diverse social and economic backgrounds. My experience extends to supporting clients dealing with identity issues, suicidal thoughts, depression, eating disorders, self-esteem issues, self-harm, anxiety, relationship challenges, and family dynamics. I have also dedicated five years to working at one of London’s leading residential clinics for individuals battling addictions.

Before transitioning into a career as a counsellor, I spent 30 years as a portrait photographer, capturing moments, emotions, and stories through the lens of my camera. Photography allowed me to explore the world visually, connecting with people and places in unique ways. It taught me to observe the subtle details, to notice what often goes unseen, and to appreciate the power of perspective. This experience shaped my ability to see beneath the surface, a skill I now carry into my work as a counsellor, where I help people explore their own stories with depth and empathy.

I hold a postgraduate diploma in counselling from The Minster Centrep

Who are we

How many roles do we play, and how do we balance the shifting responsibilities of our lives? This question unveils the complexity of our identities as we move through various roles, each calling for its own measure of care and attention. The true challenge lies in harmonising these demands and finding balance without losing ourselves along the way.

Thoughts

Love

The will to extend oneself for the purpose of nurturing one's own or another's spiritual growth. M. Scott Peck

Relationships

When we can be alone, we can be with others without using them as a means of escape. bell hooks

Addictions

Addiction is often seen as a substance or behavior problem, but it begins as a solution to something deeper. The real question is: a solution to what?

My Practice

  • I work with clients with various incomes on a sliding scale. We can discuss what would be affordable for you.
  • The session times are for 50 minutes.
  • The sessions will be at the same time and the same place on a weekly basis.
  • I work both online and face-to-face in-person sessions.
  • A commitment to regular and continuous sessions is important for the effectiveness of our work together.
  • Before we commence work together, I recommend we spend 20 to 30 minutes talking to assess how we are with each other and if we feel we can work together. This time will not be charged.

Your Questions Answered

The duration of therapy varies significantly and can depend on multiple factors. Sometimes, the issue you’re looking to address might be indicative of a deeper, underlying problem. I prefer to periodically review our progress so you can assess the changes. If you’re interested in short-term therapy, I offer sessions that span 8, 10, or 12 sessions, with a review towards the end to evaluate progress and next step, alternatively we can work with an open-ended approach to see where the wind takes us and without holding the constraints of a timescale in mind.

Think of therapy as a space where you can honestly explore your thoughts and feelings in a secure environment that guarantees empathy and careful consideration. While I may gently challenge your views to help broaden your perspective, the ultimate goal is for you to uncover your own truths and insights.

Therapy is most effective when approached with openness, honesty, and compassion. It’s not always an easy journey, but being patient and kind to yourself can unveil new aspects of your identity, leading to a more profound and comprehensive understanding of yourself. To enhance this process, we will aim to meet consistently at the same time and place each week, which helps establish a stable and secure environment conducive to growth.
